“Ligers and Tigons and Bears… Oh My!”

Category: Misc. — Dave Conklin @ 2:42 pm

liger-napoleon.jpgIn doing some research online today about blogging for corporate PR purposes, I shockingly came to the realization that the animal Napoleon refers to in the movie Napoleon Dynamite as a "Liger"… actually exhists. As it turns out, there are some odd people in different parts of the world who breed male lions with female tigers to create "ligers" (See the definition below).

The liger is a cross (a hybrid) between a male lion and a female tiger. It is therefore a member of genus Panthera. It looks like a giant lion with diffused stripes. Like tigers (and unlike lions), ligers like swimming.

So, you’re probably as shocked as I am. Well… you’re probably not because you probably don’t care. However, I still was astounded and in need of further proof once I came accross this fact. So I found an actual photograph of a real liger.

Liger_photo.jpgThis photograph is of a liger by the name of "Hobbs" who lives at Sierra Safari Zoo in Nevada. However, if you want to actually see a loger in person, you can go to South Carolina to Barefoot Landing.

Even more odd is the fact that there are also "Tigons". These are born from male Tigers and female Lions.

We live in a bizarre world.
