OK… So, yet again I sit here completely frustrated because some code that I have implemented on a site doesn’t work with Internet Explorer. For those of you who don’t know, Internet Explorer is the program that you use to browse the internet. Microsoft has it automatically installed on every computer that has windows. And, well… to be blunt… it is hated by about 95% of all tech people.
There are 6 people (including myself) that deal with web development in different ways at work. I am going to estimate that I deal with an IE problem at least once a week. Once I find one, it usually takes about an hour to fix. Sometimes it takes much longer.
Anyway, if my tech team deals with the same problem, that’s 6 hours per week that we’re dealing with crap that Microsoft has blessed us with.
OK, so 6 hours times 52 weeks = 312 hours of wasted time. Let’s say the average tech person makes $14 per hour.
Microsoft, please send a check, payable to Dave Conklin in the amount of $4,368. I’ll send a bill for next year.

I use Wordpress to manage my blog contents. It can take a few days to get a wordpress template and plugins set up just the way that you like them. In an effort to make this a less time consuming thing, I asked Jim, a brilliant tech guy at work, if I could simply copy and paste all of the existing files from one site that I liked and paste it at the new location. He said yes and gave me a few pointers. I just did it successfully and wanted to share it with anyone who is looking to do the same.
Here’s what I did…
- Copy my existing mysql database and gave it a new name
- Copy the entire contents of old site to new site
- Update wp-config to point to the new database name
- update siteurl and blogname in the wp-options table in the mysql database
- if you don’t know your admin password, simply update it in the mysql database… be sure to select md5 in the drop down to the left of where you type the password.
- In the options area you need to change Blog address (URL): to the new url or the “view site” link won’t work in your admin area.

By no means do I consider myself a germ-freak. I do, however, do my best to not touch, well, anything at all that I find in a public restroom. I am the guy who does a stand on one foot balancing act in order to flush the toilet with my shoe. I then tuck my hand inside of my sleeve so that I don’t have to touch the stall door lock. I then typically have horrible thoughts as I touch the faucet to turn it on. But the worst has always been leaving. I look at the door knob and grimace. Especially if I find myself wearing a short sleeve shirt. But now, thanks to the $250,000 spent by Simon Sassoon and the two year he spent in development, we have the HYSO Door Knob Germ Killer. Apparently the thing cost $60 and sprays the doorknob every 15 minutes with hospital grade disinfectant.
Sounds great… but what if I’m the guy who is exiting in between sprays. I guess I’ll have to wait till it sprays again.
For a few months I have been wanting to purchase a digital SLR camera. SLR’s are basically professional grade cameras for amateurs. I was excited to see that gizmodo.com put this article out because the Canon is actually the one that I am considering.
My b-day’s coming soon and I think I’ll treat myself.

My wife, Jodi in the past tended to pick on me because I had a cell phone to answer calls, a laptop to get my email and a palm pilot (I used the Zire 71) to organize appointments, phone numbers, etc.
Now, after my recent purchase of the Palm Treo 650, I no longer am dependent on all of my "tech gagets". You see, my new treo does it all. It’s a cell phone, palm pilot and laptop all in one. I receive emails while I’m driving in the car, I can go to mapquest.com to get directions in the car, etc. because it has wireless internet. It also is an mp3 player, sound recorder, camcorder, digital camera, etc.
The downfalls that I have found? There’s a few… I use a leather belt case and if I pull the treo from the case too quickly and it pushes a button or two the call will answer before I get a chance to see who’s calling me.
With the palm I use a bluetooth headset, but if you had to actually put this phone up to your ear you’d get an 80’s flashback. It’s not exactly the smallest thing.
Anyway, if you’re looking to have less gadgets and more organization… I would highly recommend the Treo
